    • [02:08] Patrick introduces his next TEDM guest, Matthew Pollard.
    • [03:22] Matthew and Patrick get things underway as Matthew answers the question: what do you do? He likes to steer clear of commoditizing himself, and instead open to a more fruitful conversation.
    • [05:22] Matthew shares how his original book The Introverts Edge, and now the sequel The Introverts Edge to Networking, came to be. He also touches on why it’s important for introverts to understand they hold just as much, if not more, power as their extroverted counterparts.
    • [07:53] With his own struggles growing up as an introvert and diagnosed with Irlen Syndrome, Matthew describes his beginnings as a teenager, then being thrust into the hustle of sales. After getting his first sale on the 93rd try in one day, and then realizing he had to do this all over again for the following days, Matthew decided to learn a system of sales rather than give up. With time, his tenacity paid off in a big way.
    • [13:36] Using examples from his own life, Matthew defines in a simplified way what it is to be introverted and discusses the burdens both introverts and extroverts bear.
    • [18:04] The power of story. Matthew talks about belief systems and how he responds to those who say they can’t do something or achieve their dreams because they’re introverted. He uses a power of story exercise with his audience and clients to demonstrate both how destructive it can be as it short circuits the logical mind and how powerful it can be to build rapport and create trust.
    • [25:38] Constructing roadblocks and limiting beliefs is common for people before even they get started, and Matthew addresses not only the importance of knowing and expressing one’s outcome but also putting in the time, having the patience and committing oneself to learn systems, practice them and act on them.
    • [34:30] Learn to leverage and embrace technology, even automation. Get clear and concise on what you provide and the value of it, so you can articulate it whether you are networking or creating your online presence. You can conserve your energy and attract the sales you need without having to be the loudest presence, rather, the clearest.
    • [43:27] Matthew and Patrick share stories and insights about the impact of personal appearance in relation to each of their experiences with facial scars. Matthew’s perspective in general is that every disadvantage gives you a natural advantage.
    • [49:31] Matthew takes us on a journey back to his childhood in Australia and illustrates the environment in which he grew up having growth and abundance mindset parents as an influence. Hearing and experiencing the kinds of conversations they had in support of one another was of great benefit to him. It helped him to understand he had to find the path to his own success.
    • [56:29] Failure. From his viewpoint, Matthew would be shocked to find an overachiever who has not failed more than any underachiever. Work out what went wrong and seek resources to overcome that and move forward. Resilience and a curious mindset will fuel growth.
    • [65:06] Values and passion in the context of business was an evolution for Matthew. Starting with a single focus of making money, he found a more fulfilled experience of doing business once he aligned that with creating value and contribution in people’s lives. Being profitable in business rather than discounting, ups the game both for his clients, and for the further contribution he can have.
    • [70:55] Matthew uses the comedian Jim Carrey’s story to illustrate the difference between values and passion. You can fail at what you don’t love so why not take a chance on what you do love.
    • [72:54] Another story from a client demonstrates the power of bringing passion into the conversation to transform the experience from selling a commodity to having a positive impact on someone’s life. Matthew asserts that focusing on what we’re passionate about helps us feel more congruent and comfortable with our business.
    • [76:59] While there are those who have their mission and purpose established, Matthew shares that many people don’t then know how that fits into a profitable business. Important point: you can save the world AND make money. He walks through an exercise from his Better Business Coach podcast to get people connected to their goals which has a far more transformative result than simply stating the goal itself.
    • [82:51] Micro-goaling. Matthew explains the benefit of setting those short-term goals, so that once achieved we can look up and assess that landscape. Based on where we are, we can determine whether the path to the next goal remains the same or needs to shift to be in alignment.
