The Michelangelo Effect: Removing What’s Not You
We often talk about growth as something we build on. We add habits, set new goals, adopt tools and strategies. But what if real transformation is not about addition, but subtraction? That’s the question we explored in a recent Mindset Matters episode, and it led us to what I now call the Michelangelo Effect.
The inspiration came from a famous quote by the sculptor Michelangelo. When asked how he created his masterpiece “David,” he said, “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.” He didn’t add anything. He removed what didn’t belong. That metaphor hit home.
What if we are already the masterpiece, and the work is to simply chip away what isn’t true?
Here are five key takeaways from our conversation:
- You Are Already the Masterpiece
We spend a lot of time trying to “become” someone, but maybe the real task is to uncover who we already are. The work isn’t to add more to your identity. It’s to remove the parts that no longer reflect your truth. - Let Go of the Need to Be More
Society tells us to be more, do more, have more. But often, the pursuit of more becomes a trap. The constant striving can disconnect us from presence and purpose. Instead, try asking, What can I remove? - Your Ego Wants to Be Right
Ego thrives on being right. It uses past experiences to justify current behavior, even if those experiences happened once and no longer apply. Learning to question your ego’s narrative is a powerful way to uncover clarity. - Awareness Is the Chisel
When we get triggered, when we blame others, when we make excuses, those moments are mirrors. They reflect what still needs to be chipped away. The stories we tell ourselves, the hidden beliefs we carry, are the clutter. Awareness is what helps us break through it. - We All Need a Sculptor
Sometimes we need someone else to help chip away what we can’t see ourselves. That’s the role Steffany and I often play for each other and our clients. It’s not about fixing. It’s about revealing. The right support can help you see what’s already there.
As I reflect on my own journey, especially now in this season of life, I realize how much time I spent chasing more. And I don’t regret the path, but I do recognize the value of simplicity. These days, I’m more interested in removing what’s in the way than adding what’s not needed.
The MindShui approach we teach is not about fixing a broken self. It’s about uncovering the whole self beneath the noise. So ask yourself today, What am I ready to release?
