Episode #110 – Chris Biasuitti – Living Into His Truth

  • SHOW NOTES
  • [02:08] Patrick introduces his next TEDM guest and former REIN Member, Chris Biasutti.
  • [04:43] Chris and Patrick sail into their conversation as Patrick provides context for how they know each other, and Chris further explains who he was in that space.
  • [07:28] Significant self-reflection showed Chris a picture that he was not happy with. This realization further uncovered some realities about how he was compensating for an unfulfilling life. He quite simply was not living his truth.
  • [10:52] The way Chris was showing up meant he was actually hiding. Outwardly he portrayed a guy he thought he wanted to be along with all the things he thought he wanted to have. That was a betrayal to who he was inside. The misalignment Chris felt, led him to find ways to disconnect and detach.
  • [15:07] The defining moment. Though a series of events led up to it, Chris identifies the pivotal moment of shift when he connected to the understanding something was off. What followed was a year of work and self-discovery to re-connect to who he was and that led to a pretty cool path.
  • [21:58] Patrick shares a story of someone he knows who had a similar journey that resulted in great adventure and a serendipitous decision.
  • [23:52] How did this path of self-discovery play out with Chris’ business associates and friends? As Chris took on a few changes all at once, it disrupted some of the patterns both he and the people around him had come to count on. As a natural evolution, some relationships altered course and some ended.
  • [28:08] Chris explains the tools he was engaging with to support his changes and self-exploration.
  • [29:08] Chris defines his relationship with alcohol before he decided to quit drinking and what sobriety means to him both from the standpoint of drinking and overall in life.
  • [32:24] Patrick recounts his own story with alcohol, that had him pause to self-reflect at the age of 30.
  • [36:00] Adventures in sailing. Chris expands his story to share the four and a half year sailing journey he and his partner Sayo embarked on, that started with a trip to see a boat, included four guys who knew nothing about sailing offshore, Chris’ own personal meteorologist and learning a great lesson from the art of sailing: live life one moment at a time.
  • [44:32] Chris describes the indescribable: the realization of his dream, of sailing his boat, no land in sight and off on his adventure. Once back in New Zealand, back on the boat and joined by Sayo and their four-month-old daughter Mia, his achievement felt fully realized. They were doing it.
  • [46:02] Documenting the experience was important to Chris and Sayo, and from that came their YouTube channel and sharing their discoveries and explorations. Actively living and cruising a boat around the world is a full-time job, and their aim was to present the realism, not the drama.
  • [49:58] Dude, ok how are you paying for this lifestyle? Chris explains the biggest part of what makes this lifestyle work, the interesting turn of real estate market events when they made the decision to cruise full-time, and some of the other ways they generated a bit of income. After time, experience all plays a big part in reducing costs.
  • [54:25] Now hanging out in Bali with his family, Chris talks about his next business venture that aligns beautifully with his experiences of the past four years. At the effect of the past year’s global events, Chris also speaks to the decimation of the Bali economy from a suppressed tourism industry which is their primary economic driver.
  • [57:04] As his life changes began to unfold, Chris and Sayo found themselves putting in the work to fortify their relationship. He illustrates how they have navigated their relationship which is anchored in the invaluable foundation they built from that work.
  • [61:29] Any close calls sailing offshore?
  • [62:57] Chris talks about the cruising community and busts the myth that sailing is a lonely experience. As it becomes a more accessible lifestyle, there were more like-minded families to share their journey with. It has also provided the fuel that drives Chris’ new project.
  • [65:58] Free diving! Chris shares his experience as both a diver and a trainer. Man, he can hold his breath for some time!
  • [70:37] The biggest fish Chris has caught along with their most frequent boating guest, the coolest place they visited in the Solomon Islands on their travels and the rich experience it provided along with a deep sense of gratitude.
  • [76:44] The food experience while cruising the South Pacific and Southeast Asia.
  • [78:38] Future plans: Canada, sailing, new adventures and Bali.
  • [79:23] Circling back to the beginning, the surprises that showed up for Chris about doing it all.
  • [81:07] Chris provides a deeper look at his new masterclass project, why he is doing it, and how to get involved.
  • [83:39] One more burning question from Patrick to get complete: what did “living his truth” REALLY mean for Chris? Does he have any regrets? The two best decisions he made and the result they have had.
  • [88:58] Let’s do it! Set the course for some Rapid Fire: physical fitness activities inspired by the boating/island life; favourite book; favourite inspirational quote; message at the pearly gates; favourite tune; favourite movie; favourite swear word; iPhone or Android.
  • [92:10] Chris’ gratitude.
