  • Show Notes
  • [00:42] Patrick introduces his next TEDM guest Dr. Tracy Gapin.
  • [02:01] Tracy and Patrick get right to it with Tracy’s elevator pitch and how his own health journey reshaped his thinking about the traditional medical system which inspired his path to become a solution for high-performing entrepreneurs and leaders.
  • [04:32] Sparked by Patrick’s story, Tracy shares examples of how we may overestimate what we think we know about our health. Our health blind spots can show up when we dive deeper beyond the surface to explore things such as hormones, inflammation, and our gut health.
  • [11:05] Finding your blind spots. Tracy shares the best way we can get going with tests to check our markers to good health or health concerns.
  • [15:19] Most people wait until there’s a problem with their health before seeking help. Our traditional health care system is also set up for reactive vs proactive care. Tracy’s advice? Get the tests done and if all is well great! If there’s issues under the hood, they can be addressed and could lead to some incredible changes in our lives in ways we may not have realized.
  • [17:35] Getting to the why, so we show up in the very best version of ourselves, for ourselves, and for the most important people in our lives. “How long are you going to wait until you demand the best for yourself?” – Epictetus
  • [19:35] Tracy recounts his story, as a board-certified urologist, a men’s health expert, and an unhealthy, miserable human. He shares what it finally took for him not only to face his health head-on but also the medical system he operated within. That road led him back to school to study epigenetics, functional medicine, hormone therapy and peptide therapy. He did the work for himself, felt great, and shared this newfound passion with his patients who also enjoy great results without drugs or surgery.
  • [23:13] The paradigm shift Tracy has made around men’s health and what his practice has evolved to by optimizing every part of his patients’ bodies. Typically, this does not require drugs, rather, an understanding on a personalized level, how our bodies are working, what our blind spots are, and fixing them. One size fails all.
  • [26:01] Peptides – Tracy explains what they are, why they matter, and a couple of cautionary notes. Tracy’s analogy of peptides is like the frosting on the cake. There are a lot of ingredients that go into the cake first to set a foundation. The frosting augments the strength of the foundation that is already set.
  • [29:57] Tracy discusses endocrine disruptors – chemicals in our environment and toxins like refined sugar and seed oils poisoning our food and our drinking water. Studies have been shown these disruptors will crush hormones and cause a laundry list of physical and mental health issues.
  • [35:30] Specifically on the topic of alcohol, Patrick shares the awareness he gained on its health effects and his subsequent decision, plus Tracy outlines many of the other health effects that people often don’t recognize or acknowledge including sleep.
  • [39:22] Tracy’s response and recommendation for those who are unable to afford the tests that are offered at The Gapin Institute and what to do at a minimum to invest in ourselves.
  • [42:17] Issues in overall health and aging often gets accepted as a “normal” part of the process. Tracy dives into why he doesn’t believe that to be true with a story to illustrate his point and introduces regenerative medicine including Stem Cell and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy.
  • [45:13] Stem cells and intermittent fasting. Tracy lays out how they can work well together as well as why fasting is not as effective as stem cell therapy.
  • [47:23] Our gut controls everything! Tracy explains the GLP-1 peptide that can help with weight loss (and current hot topic on social media) when in fact GLP-1 is made by our gut. When our microbiome is messed up (the good bugs and the bad bugs are imbalanced) it kills the key cornerstone bacteria that helps the cell in our gut produce GLP-1 naturally.
  • [49:25] Tracy drops the biggest disruptors to the microbiome, what to avoid, and what can help including the simplest thing we can do with our diet.
  • [51:05] Protein and carbs – most people are not getting enough protein. The biggest way to lose weight and build muscle is through eating protein. Tracy suggests tracking what we eat for 3 days to measure it and provides the target intake of protein we’re looking for.
  • [53:09] Why knowing what we need to do and actually doing it doesn’t always jive, and how we can create behavioural changes and habits that set up an environment for success.
  • [58:33] Habit, choice, and discipline. In a society where most often willpower loses, Tracy emphasizes the power of discipline, behaviour and consistency. Don’t forget to celebrate!
  • [60:22] Mindset is the most important part of what they are doing at The Gapin Institute. The biggest transformation happens with enrollment. An empowering “why” is critical to reinforcing commitment. That mindset and understanding is truly the foundational place to start.
  • [63:48] Tracy shares the grand vision and mission of the work he’s doing at The Gapin Institute and what he’s most excited about next.
  • [64:59] Tracy shares gifts for the podcast audience gapininstitute.com/launch.
  • [65:54] Round up the rapid fire! Apple or android; favourite band and song; impactful book; favourite movie; message at the pearly gates.
